
Undergraduate Elective Bursary
An elective period of study can be the highlight of a medical student’s study and can bring enormous benefits for a successful future career in your chosen specialty.
The BSG is delighted to be able to offer a number of bursaries of up to £500 each, recognising that undertaking an elective has additional costs for the student. The bursary could cover expenses such as:
- Additional accommodation and travel costs
- The administration fee charged by institutions in organising the elective
- Visa and immunisation costs for electives abroad
Applications will be judged anonymously by a panel of judges appointed by the BSG and considered under the following criteria:
- Relevance to Gastroenterology or Hepatology
- Defined learning objectives delivering benefits to the student
- Support from the learning institution
- General quality of application
Criteria
- Students must be in their penultimate or final year of undergraduate study
- Students must be enrolled at a UK University
- Students must be Undergraduate members of the British Society of Gastroenterology
- Electives must be a minimum of four weeks
- Electives can be in the UK or abroad
- Electives must relate to gastroenterology or hepatology
- Students must agree to provide a written report to the BSG within 8 weeks of the conclusion of their elective
- Electives must have been approved by the student’s home university
- All applications should be accompanied by confirmation of the elective by the host institution

The form will require you to outline the plans for your elective period within a limit of 500 words, including the following:
- Aims and objectives, scope and any proposed project
- Other Grant applications for this period of study
- How will this elective influence your career development?
Applications for electives taking place in 2024 will open on Thursday 11th January 2024 and close on Wednesday 28th February 2024.
